What makes Bastia so unique is its focus on a part of the Mediterranean we hardly get to see in Philly: the island of Corsica. The menu is a beautiful blend of French and Italian cuisines, and every dish I tried felt like a journey to its northern shores. We started with the grilled octopus, which was perfectly tender and given a vibrant kick from a salsa verde. It was a stunning first bite that set the tone for the rest of the evening.
Next, we shared the fregola, a Sardinian pasta, which was tinged a beautiful gold with saffron and packed with flavor. But the absolute showstopper for me was the storzapretti ricotta dumplings. This is a dish native to the Corsican city of Bastia, and it was a revelation—pillowy soft, rich, and utterly comforting. It’s the kind of dish you think about for days afterward.
I learned that the menu changes regularly, guided by the seasons and the creative whims of Chef Tyler Akin. For me, that’s not a drawback; it’s the best reason to keep going back. Based on my experience, I have no doubt that whatever Chef Akin puts on the menu will be fantastic. Truly, it felt like nothing on this menu misses.
Bastia is the perfect spot for a special occasion, a romantic date night, or anytime you want to be reminded of how transportive a great meal can be. It’s an elegant, delicious, and truly memorable addition to Philadelphia's dining scene.I can't wait to return and see what they come up with next.
