Elevating a Time-Honored Craft

The competition comes at a critical time for the industry.According to 2023 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately 139,100 butchers and meat cutters in the United States. However, the trade is facing a projected decline of 2,900 positions by 2033.

The 2026 Best Butcher Contest aims to shine a spotlight on the essential artisans who sustain the region’s beef and pork supply chains, celebrating a skill set that combines physical precision with customer service.

"The Best Butcher Contest is about honoring the craftsmanship, precision, and deep product knowledge that these professionals bring to retail and foodservice customers every single day,"said Kaitlyn Swope,Director of Marketing for NEBPI."Their work ensures consumers can trust the quality, consistency, and care behind their beef and pork purchases."

  • Precision Cutting: expertly breaking down beef and pork subprimals.
  • Yield Evaluation: Demonstrating maximum efficiency and minimizing waste.
  • Consumer Display: creating visually appealing retail presentations.
