The Edge of Abstraction: A Dialogue in Color and Form
The exhibition, which opens to the public on March 15, 2025, and runs through mid-May, explores the themes of abstraction, color, and materiality. Pieri and Elman, though working in different mediums, create a compelling dialogue through their art.
- Diane Pieri: Pieri's work transforms the concept of naval flotillas – historically associated with conflict – into vibrant, floral-inspired formations. These floating, interconnected pieces evoke harmony and beauty. Her aesthetic is a fusion of Japanese, Indian, and Tibetan artistic traditions, utilizing delicate papers and gold leaf to create a sense of elegance and universality. Pieri is a highly accomplished, award-winning Philadelphia-based artist with a long history of exhibitions and public art contributions, including work with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. Her accolades include two Pollock-Krasner Grants.
- Erin Elman: Elman, a Brooklyn-born, Philadelphia-based artist and the Dean of Graduate & Professional Studies at the University of the Arts, creates paintings that she describes as "love notes to color." Her layered compositions draw from Eastern and Western influences, weaving ancestral memories and lived experiences together. Through bold color and intentional yet spontaneous mark-making, Elman's work seeks a dynamic, shared moment with the viewer. Her work is part of many collections, including the Tate London.
