Behind every plate of food served in Philadelphia’s thriving restaurant scene is a dedicated workforce heavily supported by the local immigrant community.Yet,many of these essential workers face severe barriers to basic healthcare and education.
This is a reality Chef Jose Garces and Dr.Beatriz Garces know all too well.In 2010,the couple founded the Garces Foundation following a devastating and preventable tragedy:the death of Felipe,a 26-year-old employee who delayed seeking care for thyroid cancer due to fears surrounding his immigrant status.
"When we lost Felipe, the most painful part was knowing it was preventable. If only he had felt safe seeing a doctor,"says Dr.Beatriz Garces,Co-Founder and practicing dentist who treats patients through the foundation's programs. "Every ticket, every bid, every toast funds the medical care and educational resources that keep that from happening again."
Infinite Impact To fund this lifesaving work, the Foundation hosts its Annual Benefit. Taking place this year on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Live! Casino & Hotel, the event is the organization's largest fundraiser. The money raised goes directly toward programs that provide a safety net for underserved families:
- Community Health Days&Sonrisa Dental Program: Offering free, comprehensive health and dental screenings to those who need it most.
- IDIOMA: An English as a Second Language (ESL) and digital literacy program tailored specifically for the service industry.
The impact is tangible. In 2025 alone, the Garces Foundation served over 1,000 people,52%of whom earn less than $13,000 per year.
"As a business owner raised by immigrant parents, I know firsthand how essential Philadelphia's immigrant workforce is to this city,"says Chef Garces."This event was designed to be one of the best parties in the region, with a very important purpose."
By purchasing a $125 ticket to the Artisan Night Market-themed benefit, attendees are directly funding the English classes, health clinics, and support systems that empower Philadelphia's immigrant community to thrive.
