The inaugural event will spotlight the acclaimed book "Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop." The evening will feature an intimate conversation between the book's author, culture journalist, and producer Vikki Tobak, and Joseph Patel, the Academy Award-winning producer, director, and journalist known for "Summer of Soul." Their discussion will delve into the making of "Contact High" and explore the rich visual history of hip-hop culture.

Following the conversation, renowned DJ Cosmo Baker will perform a vinyl set curated to reflect the book's iconic imagery and the influential artists featured within its pages.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase copies of "Contact High," provided in partnership with local independent retailer Headhouse Books, and get them signed by Tobak. A curated selection of prints from the book will be on display and available for purchase. 48 Record Bar plans to make an audio recording of the discussion.

"With Cosmo Baker’s BOOK CLUB, we wanted to create something that lives at the intersection of music, storytelling, and community — where the act of deep listening extends beyond records to the ideas and experiences that shape them,” said Joey Sweeney, Creative Director at 48 Record Bar. He added that launching with "Contact High" and featuring Tobak and Patel represents the "high-vibe conversation" the venue aims to foster.

The series aims to build community through immersive events bringing together authors, musicians, and cultural commentators. Future editions are already scheduled: Wednesday, May 7th will feature Adam Mansbach, author of "The Golem of Brooklyn," and Thursday, May 22nd will host a book launch with Philadelphia writer and DJ John Morrison. More events are expected to be announced later.

Tickets for the April 30th debut event are priced at $29.75 and are available for purchase online.

While entry to the events does not require membership, 48 Record Bar offers a Record of The Month Membership ($40/month). This optional membership includes first access to ticketed events, invitations to members-only nights, a newsletter, a quarterly printed zine, a membership card with a rewards program, and a hand-selected monthly album with custom liner notes.
