Meet the Living Sculptures
Visitors traversing the zoo campus will encounter these impressive horticultural creations:
- Giant Giraffes: Two massive giraffes grace Bird Lake Plaza, with the tallest reaching an impressive 21 feet and weighing over 13,000 pounds, crafted from 10,000 individual plants. Its companion stands at 14.5 feet tall.
- Preening Peacock: Located in the Water is Life area, a vibrant peacock sculpture showcases intricate patterns using 5,000 plants.
- Beautiful Butterfly: Greeting guests near the North Entrance Gate, a 7.5-foot tall butterfly mosaic dazzles with 3,200 plants.
- Slow-Moving Snail: Found near the Treehouse, this charming snail sculpture adds a touch of whimsy, composed of 3,100 plants.
- Fantastical Fish: Near the Zoo Garage on Girard Avenue, a school of four colorful fish (yellow, blue, green, pink) "swim" through the landscape, crafted from thousands of plants combined.
Artistry Meets Horticulture
These intricate sculptures are more than just shaped plants; they are examples of mosaiculture, a technique combining art and horticultural science. Using 22 different species of plants, Santoline Mosaiculture meticulously creates patterns mimicking fur, scales, feathers, and shells, celebrating the diversity of life on Earth. This North American zoo debut for their displays highlights the unique appeal of the exhibition.

The exhibit aligns with the Zoo's mission to connect visitors with all living things. "Plants are vital to a healthy ecosystem that supports all life on Earth, and we hope the addition of these eye-catching mosaic topiaries will spark a curiosity about how we can all be better stewards for the planet,” said Philadelphia Zoo President & CEO Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman.
Visiting ZOOtopiaries
"ZOOtopiaries: Nature’s Sculptures" is included with regular Philadelphia Zoo admission or membership and will be on display now through October 2025. While exploring the topiaries, guests can also enjoy the recently opened "Wildlife Rescue" exhibit featuring conservation-themed animal statues.
