Exploring FDR Park in Philadelphia

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - If you want a unique outdoor activity this summer, consider exploring FDR Park. The Park is home to the 2021-2022-Philadelphia Flower Show. This annual event, which featured 15 acres of gorgeous gardens, the event, however, will not return to the park in 2023.

The FDR Park Master Plan aims to create a new vision for the park, leveraging the power of parks to promote local economies and protect Philadelphia from climate change. The proposed plan aims to reclaim the park's original vision while providing a more inclusive space for people of all backgrounds. It also strives to build trust and foster social cohesion, which is crucial in countering the social fragmentation that has plagued many cities in recent decades.

Located in South Philly, FDR Park is an urban oasis surrounded by industrial areas. It was created by the Olmsted Brothers, a landscape architecture firm that helped transform a former Navy Yard into a city park. Today, the park is one of Philadelphia's top destinations. It has even been included on the National Register of Historic Places.

The FDR Park's current plans include adding a 33-acre wetland area, which will tackle frequent flooding and pursue a path to a more climate-resilient future. It will be located in the southwest corner of the park's 348-acre property and feature native ecosystems.
