From Rowdy Tradition to Broadway Spectacle

The Mummers tradition is a unique blend of global influences, dating back to the 17th century when Swedish,Finnish, and British colonists brought their custom of festive winter neighborhood visits—often involving costumes, music, and the firing of guns—to the Philadelphia area.

  • The Origins: These rowdy, unorganized New Year's Day celebrations evolved through the 19th century, incorporating elements of the British Mummer's play and the satirical spirit of the ancient Roman Saturnalia festival. Groups of working-class men roamed the streets, marching, shouting, and demanding food and drink in exchange for comic verse.
  • The Birth of the Parade: By the late 1800s, unable to suppress the popular custom, the City of Philadelphia decided to organize and sanction the event, offering cash prizes for the best performances. The first official city-sponsored Mummers Parade was held on January 1, 1901.
  • Evolution: Over the decades, simple, makeshift costumes were replaced by the elaborate, sequined, and feathered productions seen today. The parade evolved into the four competing divisions: Fancies, Wench Brigades, Comics, and String Bands.
