Delaware River Trail Expansion in Philadelphia

The Delaware River Trail—Completed in 2021, the central portion of the Delaware River Trail will run between Washington Avenue and Spring Garden Street on the east side of Columbus Boulevard.

Delaware River Trail's Central Section Unveiled: A Safer, Greener Waterfront for All

Philadelphia's Delaware River waterfront has received a major upgrade with the completion of the central portion of the Delaware River Trail. This multi-use path officially opened in the fall of 2021, stretches between Washington Avenue and Spring Garden Street, providing a safe and scenic route for walkers, joggers, and cyclists.

A Key Link in the Waterfront Network

The new trail segment is a crucial link in the more extensive Delaware River Trail network, connecting popular waterfront destinations like Race Street Pier, Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest and Winterfest, Spruce Street Harbor Park, and Washington Avenue Pier. By providing a dedicated, protected lane for non-motorized traffic, the trail enhances safety and accessibility for all who use it.

Design Features for Safety and Beauty

The central section of the trail boasts a thoughtful design that prioritizes safety and aesthetics. Key features include:

Curb-separated paths: A dedicated, bi-directional asphalt bike path is separated from the pedestrian sidewalk, ensuring a clear division between different modes of transportation and reducing the risk of collisions.
Landscaping: Lush landscaping, including hundreds of new trees, shrubs, and grasses, creates a welcoming environment and a natural buffer between the trail and the adjacent roadways.
Lighting: Solar-powered pedestrian light poles enhance visibility and safety, especially during evening hours.
Street furnishings: Benches, bicycle racks (including a two-tier shelter at Spruce Street Harbor Park), and trash/recycling receptacles provide convenience and comfort for trail users.

A Vision Realized

The completion of this central section marks a significant milestone in the Master Plan for Central Delaware, a community-driven initiative to revitalize Philadelphia's waterfront. The trail improves connectivity between waterfront attractions and enhances the overall experience for residents and visitors alike.

Future Expansion

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC), which oversaw the trail's design and construction, is actively seeking funding to extend the trail further north to Allegheny Avenue and south to Oregon Avenue. This expansion will realize the full vision of a continuous waterfront trail, providing even greater access to the Delaware River and its many attractions.

A Green Oasis for All

The Delaware River Trail's central section is more than just a transportation corridor; it's a green oasis in the heart of the city, offering a peaceful escape from the urban hustle and bustle. Whether you're commuting to work, enjoying a stroll, or cycling along the river, the trail provides a safe and scenic way to experience the beauty of the Delaware River waterfront.
