PHILADELPHIA – August 18, 2023 – The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts presents two events as part of Rising Sun: Artists In An Uncertain America on Thursday, August 31 2023.

Petah Coyne and Jodithrockmorton, An Artist and Curator Discussion, starts at 6:00pm. Petah Coyne's work, which is currently on display at PAFA and Jodithrockmorton (PAFA's former curator of contemporary art), will have a conversation one-on-one about their contributions in Rising Sun. They will also discuss the collaboration between the African American Museum of Philadelphia and PAFA in developing the project, as well as how the turbulent years of the Trump presidency, the pandemic, and the murder George Floyd affected the project. The two will also talk about Coyne’s monumental installations, which are part of Rising Sun. They will share their insights on her artistic career and practice over 50 years. Registration is required in advance.

At 7:30 pm there will be a special Rising Moon Rooftop Reception on the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building rooftop terrace. This is a chance to celebrate the magic and wonder of the rising Moon. Moonrise starts at 8:16pm. Registration is required.

The PAFA installation Rising Sun: American Artists in an Uncertain World will be displayed in the Historic Landmark Building at 118 N. Broad Street from 5:00 to 5:50 pm. The rooftop reception and artist/curator discussion will occur in the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building at 128 N. Broad Street.
